Joseph P. Anthony was born on Friday, March 1, 1872 in Leavenworth, Kansas, the son of Michael and Margaret Anthony. He was a pioneer resident of the community, and lived in Leavenworth all his life. Joseph was in the butcher business since the age of 21, working with his father. From 1889 to 1890, he owned Anthony & Mikles Butcher Shop with J.W. Milkes. He worked at Blockburger Butcher shop and Kersten’s Store (which bought out A & P), located at 4th and Delaware, Leavenworth, Kansas. He also owned Anthony’s Butcher shop near Broadway and Shawnee. He worked at Campbell’s grocery Store and Brown’s grocery store in Lansing, Kansas. He operated Anthony Butcher Shop in Lansing Kansas in the 1920’s. On July 10, 1922, a fire broke out at his business, as well as other businesses in the same building. He was only out of business a few days. It is believed the KKK started it, but there is nothing to document it. Joseph died on Wednesday, July 19, 1933 at his home at 517 Dakota St. Leavenworth, Kansas at 6:15 PM from mouth and throat cancer. He was 61 years old. Dr. A. J. Smith was his physician. He was buried on Saturday, July 22, 1933 at 9AM from the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Leavenworth, Kansas. The Rev. J.E. Biehler presided. Joseph’s body lied in state at his home until the time of his funeral. He was buried at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kansas. J.J. O’Donnell Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
On Tuesday, May 5, 1896, he married Edith I. Vetterling in Leavenworth, Kansas. The justice of the peace was Thomas L. Johnson. Relatives said she was a mail order bride, that the marriage was of convenience.
