About Joseph Barnard
Joseph Barnard's grave is the oldest (1695) in the Deerfield cemetery. On a trip there this month I personally located it for the first time.
For future reference:
The cemetery is at the end of what is called the Albany Road (before its bend to the left) in Deerfield, which passes the Headmaster's house, the dining hall, and the gymnasium. It is just past the last dormitory on the left, overlooked by the room on the third floor of the Bruce Barton dormitory which I occupied during my senior year at Deerfield, 1962-63.
As you stand at the entrance, you will see a large mound at the far end, a little to the left. This is the common grave of 48 Deerfield residents killed in the Indian massacre raid of February 29, 1704.
Go to the right inside the fence and continue about 90 degrees around the circumference of the cemetery grounds. You will pass several old Barnard stones which are hard to see because they face the fence and are very close to it. The Joseph Barnard grave is NOT among this first Barnard group (which is the mistake I had made in the past and why I was never able to locate the correct stone until this year).
As you continue along the fence, look to your left at two trees in the center of the cemetery. When you can see the very last first-floor window of the adjacent dormitory beyond the cemetery exactly centered between the two trees, stop and face the trees and this centered window.
You will see the Joseph Barnard grave directly in front of you about 10 paces away. It is medium sized and has a rounded top with scrolls at the side. You can probably read most of the writing even at 10 paces.
It reads "HERE LYES BURED (sic) YE BODY OF JOSEPH BERNARD (sic) AGED 45 YEARS DEC SEPTEMBER YE 6, 1695." DEC means Deceased, and YE is written both times as a upper case Y with a lower case e above it, and this of course is the definite article The.
As indicated in family genealogical lore, Joseph Barnard, the 7th great grandfather of DWMJr, CRM, and JAM, was the town clerk of Deerfield and was killed by Indians. This is the oldest grave in the cemetery. Nearby are Burts and Childses, who married early Barnards. As indicated above, there are descendants and relatives of Joseph elsewhere in the cemetery, but these Barnard stones are very hard to read because of (1) fading, (2) being too close to the fence, and (3), being in the dark under tree branches.
end notes _____
One of the founders of Deerfield. Generation #2 of this Barnard Line. He was shot and mortally wounded by Indians near his home. A marker was placed by a descendant (James Barnard) at the location where he was shot.
He was the first husband of Sarah Strong Barnard, married at Northampton 13 Jan 1675. She later married Jonathan Wells.
Son of Francis Barnard and Hannah Merrill Barnard.

Name
Joseph Barnard[1] Joseph (b. Hartford, abt. 1648-d. Deerfield, Sept. 6 or 18, 1695), settled at Northampton, Mass.;
removed to Deerfield; mortally wounded by Indians, Aug. 18, 1695; m. (Savage says July 13 or Dec. 13, 1675 or Jan. 13, 1675/76), Sarah (b. 1656-d. Deerfield, Feb. 10, 1734), dau. of Elder John Strong, of Northampton (she m. 2d, 1698, Capt. Jonathan Wells); 6 sons, 5 daus.;
Evans (1975) lists an early wife for Francis Barnard, Mary Watson (died ca. 1642), and names her the mother of Joseph (“1641”-1695); however Joseph’s death at age 45 years, inscribed on his tombstone (see hereafter), implies a birth year for Joseph as 1650, when he would most probably have been born to Hannah, as were the other five children. (The date of Joseph’s birth, however, does not rule out this possible early marriage.) Other Internet websites repeat without any evidence the early marriage to a Mary Watson.

Comment: Unclear why in display this is spelled Barnard when the gravestone clearly states Bernard as the family name?
