(For a time a tradition was current among the descendant of Joseph Bell to the effect that he was an only child, son of a Joseph Bell who was murdered, with his wife, by an indentured servant. The origin of this tradition is not clear, but it is known that there was an older Joseph Bell (contemporary to William Bell, father of Joseph . This older Joseph Bell purchased a lot at the founding of Staunton in 1747, and received a license to operate an “ordinary” in 1758. It seems likely that he was a close associate, probably a brother of William Bell, which could account for the confusion in the tradition).
