About Joseph Ballenger Bond, Sr.

JOSEPH BALLENGE SR5 BOND, b. May 17, 1756, Albemarle Co, VA; d. Abt. 1852, Hall Co, GA; m. JANE, 1775, Amherst Co Va

A Patriot of the American Revolution for VIRGINIA. DAR Ancestor # A011909

Joseph Ballenger Bond, Sr. was the son of Nathan Bond, Sr., and Elizabeth Ballenger (or Ballinger). Joseph was evidently named for his grandfather, Rev. Joseph Ballinger. His siblings were Nathan Bond, Jr., Richard Cox Bond, and Mary Walker Bond Hilley.

Joseph grew up in Amherst Co., Virginia, and there is evidence that he was a Revolutionary War soldier. The pension application of John Cash from Amherst Co. mentions Joseph Bond as a "fellow soldier," and a Joseph Bond did serve in the 1st Light Dragoons from Virginia, but that is all that is written. Joseph was however listed in the Public Service Claims Records as a furnisher of wheat for the Amherst Co. militia.

Joseph's father deeded him about 150 acres of land in Amherst Co. in 1782, which he owned until 1790. That year, he sold his land, and he moved his family to Elbert Co., Georgia, where he eventually owned land by Beaverdam Creek. By 1805, he was living in Franklin Co., Georgia, and there he owned land on the Broad River.

In the 1820 Georgia Land Lottery, Joseph drew Lot 383, Dist. 7 of Gwinnett Co., which was granted to him on November 18, 1821. It was land bounded by the Chattahoochee River. After he and his family moved there, one thing Joseph did was to own and operate a ferry across the Chattahoochee at the point where Baldridge Creek enters from the Forsyth Co. side of the river.

Joseph and his wife Jane (maiden name unknown) were married about the year 1778. They had the following eleven children:

William Bond, born September 4, 1779, who married Elizabeth Rowsey; Eason/Easom Bond, born September 23, 1780, who married Mary Rowsey; Susannah Bond, born February 19, 1782, who never married; Nathan Bond, born July 19, 1783, who married a Mary; Mary (Polly) Bond, born January 17, 1785, who married Jesse B. Hansard; Gabriel Bond, September 1, 1786, who married Clara Rowsey; Jane (Jenny) Bond, born March 7, 1788, who married James Hodge; Joseph Ballenger Bond, Jr., born February 2, 1790, who married Sarah Baker; Charity Bond, born March 6, 1792, who married Benjamin Lowry; Malinda (Milley) Bond, born August 16, 1786, who married William M. Otwell; Lavina Bond, born September 1, 1796, who married Elisha Herring.

Joseph lived into his 90's. According to his will, which was proved on March 15, 1852, at his death Joseph owned 150 acres of land plus household articles which together were worth about $715. He was buried on his own land, which was then in Hall Co. (the boundary of Gwinnett Co. had been changed), but unfortunately his grave is now at the bottom of Lake Lanier. If there had been a marker, his grave would have been moved, but there was none.

Joseph Ballenger Bond, SeniorHe was listed in deeds and wills of his father and mother and was born on May 17, 1756 according to his personal Bible records. It also states that he married Jeney _____ who was born October 15, 1754 and died May 28, 1837. On a deed in 1790 and again in 1825 her name was Jane. They were married evidently about 1777.He was listed in the Public Service Claims Records as having furnished wheat for the militia in Amherst Co., VA in 1783. He also was listed as serving in a "relief force"; as being a "fellow soldier" in the Rev. with a John Cash from Amherst Co., VA when Cash made application for a pension from Hall Co., GA in 1841; and as a "Rev. Soldier" in the 1850 Hall Co., GA census. A Joseph Bond was listed as a member of the 1st Light Dragoons from Virginia but there is no proof he was this Joseph. In 1782 his father deeded him of 600 acres on Stone House Creek in Amherst Co., VA. The real estate records there show him credited with 155 of the 600 acres from 1782 through 1789 and his personal property tax records from 1782 through 1791 show he owned from 2 to 4 horses, from 6 to 9 cattle, and no other white males age 16 or over in his household. In 1790 he and Jane sold the 155 acres to John Holloway. In the 1790 Amherst Co., VA census he was listed with 5 white males. They must have waited until after the fifth son was born in 1790 to move to Georgia. He was a witness on a deed of his brother, Richard, in Elbert Co., GA late in 1791. In 1797 he bought 419 acres on Carter's Creek, a fork of the Beaverdam Creek, Elbert Co. from Alexander Winbish; and was credited with this in an early undated tax list, being in the same district as that of his brothers. He was on the muster roll of his brother Richard's military district in Elbert Co. 1793-1800.By 1805 he was living in Franklin Co., GA when he returned taxes for his son, William; and in 1806 he and Jean sold the 419 acres in Elbert Co. to Ralph Banks. In 1808 he was a witness on various deeds, along with his sons, Joseph Jr. and Easom; and bought 256 acres on the N. Fork of the Broad River from Robert Barnwell. He drew from Franklin Co. in the 1820 Georgia Land Lottery and got lot 383, Dst. 7, of Gwinette Co. which was granted to him on November 18, 1821. This section of Gwinette Co. was later taken into Hall Co. and Joseph moved to this land immediately. It was bounded by the Chattahoochee River on the West, the South point being at the mouth of Shoal Creek; and ran out from the River in a Northeasterly direction. This land is today, in 1970, under about 500 feet of water of Lake Lanier about where the newly developed Lake Lanier Islands Recreation Park is located - just above the Buford Dam site. In 1823 he deeded his son, Joseph Jr., 75 acres of this land. In 1825 he and Jane sold the 256 acres in Franklin Co. to a Jesse LeGrand.Among possible other endeavors, he owned and operated a ferry across the Chattahoochee River where Baldridge Creek enters from the Forsythe Co. side of the River. A half-breed Indian, David Cordury, owned half of Bond's Ferry and lived on the Forsythe Co. side. John Hansford was the Ferryman in 1836. , He and his wife were in the 1830 census of Hall Co., GA as age 70-80 with their unmarried daughter, Susannah, and an unidentified male. In 1840 his wife was deceased and the male and his daughter still with him. In 1850 he was age 94 and his daughter 68.His will was dated July 21, 1847 and proved March 15, 1852 in Hall Co., but, as he requested, recorded in Forsythe Co. He divided his estate equally among all his children. Executors were William M. Otwell & Ezekeal Thomas. Witnesses were Thomas Horton, Ezekial Thomas and Julius C. Hendrix. He signed with an "X".His inventory consisted of 150 acres of land and household articles totaling $716.42. Among those buying his personal property were Susannah Bond, William M. Otwell, James and John Handsord. His land was sold as "about 100 acres of Lot 383, Dst. 7 of originally Gwinette Co., now Hall Co.; and Fractional lots 463 and 464 of Forsythe Co. of about 42 acres". Legacy receipts are of record in Forsythe Co. containing 24 vouchers. Three sons, two daughters and 4 sons-in-law got $47.60 each. The eleven children of his deceased son, Easom, got $4.32 each. His son William's share was paid by paying off a noteJoseph had signed for him.He was most likely buried on high ground on his own land, but no grave marker was found when, during the construction of Lake Lanier, the Corps of Engineers carefully recorded and moved all graves found in this section - three different sites in all.Proven Issues:1 William Bond, b. 9-4-17792.
