Note the spelling of the family name as "Breau" at this point. In A Breaux Family History on page 39 Gerald P. Breaux wrote: "Joseph was born in Acadia in 1751, experienced the deportation as a 4-year old child, and grew to manhood in Maryland. When the family migrated to Louisiana, Joseph was approximately 17 years old - and probably more advanced than his actual age would indicate because of the difficult life he must have had to endure. He did not marry until about age 23, or six years after arriving in Louisiana. However, he was destined to marry three times and leave a family of 17 identified children - and possibly 4 or more others who may not have survived beyond infancy! His family chart requires two pages to contain his progenity, which grew up not only in the St. James area but also in the St. Martinville area!"
And from page 42: "The succession of Joseph Breau may be found in the Lafayette Court House ( Succ. # 55, dated 23 Jan 1825 ), and it verifies the family makeup herein described. Prior to discovering this succession, I had serious doubt about the third marriage of Joseph,......However, the facts clearly show the contrary."
