About Hilaire-Charles Breau

On page 44 of A Breaux Family History Gerald P. Breaux wrote: "In the census of 1820, Hilaire and his second family are found residing in the region of the Attakapas Canal, where they were to remain permanently. The Attakapas Canal was a man-made waterway connecting Bayou Lafourche and Lake Verret. Its construction was authorized by the Territorial Legislature in 1806, but it was not completed until about 1825. It is possible that Hilaire was employed in the construction of this canal."

Also, from A Breaux Family History, (pp 44 &45) Gerald P. Breaux wrote: "A surprise landing of British troops below New Orleans took place on December 23, 1814, initiating the Battle of New Orleans. The major fighting occurred on January 8, 1815, when the British marched upon entrenchments prepared by General Andrew Jackson, and they suffered severe casualties. Soundly defeated, the British withdrew from Louisiana on January 19, 1815.

Hilaire was a soldier in this conflict, as verified through Reference 24 and his official war record obtained from the National Archives. He is listed under the name Hyler Brand - where Brand is a mistaken recognition of Braud and Hyler is corruption of the first name, sometimes spelled as Hylaire instead of Hilaire. He was a Private in the 7th Regiment under Colonel LeBeuf, and was part of a contingent of 300 Acadians who joined Jackson on December 30, 1814, to defend New Orleans. He was called up on December 28, 1814 and served until March 4, 1815, for which service he was paid $17.80 ( 2 mos., 7 days @ $8.00 per month)!"

[ I added this information to Hilaire Breaux's Profile Page because I think these are very interesting facts to know about one of our ancesters. I'm grateful Gerald P. Breaux did the research to discover and clarify this information for all of us. - Norma (Aubey) Lewis]
