A Joseph Burtch was included in the list of tenants in Lot 7 of the "undivided lands" ca. 1760. [Philips-Governor Papers, Columbia Univ.].

         A Joseph Burtch was noted as a tailor in the Merritt store records in 1775. [DCSB II:E:149]. Joseph Burtch and his brother Benjamin were probably the men referred to in the following: 26 July 1749; "Names of the rioters complained of by Capt. Bemis - John Monroe, Joseph & Benjamin Butch and

         John Bradshaw (brought me by Mr. Will Brownell, the account thereof." [ELP box 129].
