4. JEREMIAH3 BURTCH, (Jonathan2, Thomas1) was born ca. 1694 in Stonington and m. there 5 Feb. 1717 Margaret, b. 1690, dau. of Ebenezer and Anne (Comstock) Billings. Her brother Increase Billings had children who came to Beekman. Jeremiah Burtch had several real property transactions in Westerly and Stonington, the last in Aug. 1742, about the time he left for Beekman.
Jeremiah Burtch settled on a 136 acre farm, number three, in lot 2 of the Beekman Patent in the Pawling area. This farm had been settled in 1736 by Dennis Kelley with first rents due 1742 but by 1748 Burtch was on the farm. Henry Beekman noted in his rent book; "Will pay rent when I prove the land myn." [ELP Box 129:A:81]. Beekman also noted that David Leonard had a lease instead of William Peeks which was in lot 2 near Jer. Burtch. [id 96]. This farm was in the area of the Patent known as the 'Gore' and the title to the land was in constant dispute.
The Judgement Roils at the Hall of Records, NYC include an action against Jeremiah Burtch for £100, brought by James Jackson (actually Henry Beekman) in the
October Term 1746. Burtch was charged with trespass on a nine year lease dated 1 July 1746 from Beekman. Joseph Murray represented Burtch. The case was held over until April 1753 at which time George Soule was retained by Burtch to show the land to a jury which found Burtch guilty of trespass and fined him £100 and 6p costs.
[Hall of Records, NYC, roll 134, C-5]. He was also involved in an action brought by Jonathan Brown in Oct. 1758. [AD 4065].
The Edward Livingston Papers contain much detail about the case of Burtch, Poughquag area, etc., DeLong and Woolman, (Entire page is accounts). 6 May 1752 "Then
went with Mr. Clinton on the jury a view in the case of Burtch..." Woolman evidently also at trial. [ELP BOX 129:110; H. Beekman papers].

Mentions breakfast at Northrup, Dusenbury, Carman, Merrick. [ELP box 129:82].
5 March 1753 "Poughquag Company Dr as acc't & letters to the sheriff for giving possession of Burtch his place £3/11/3 To sundry other distributions 5/6/6 ... etc. "
(Page 116).
Jeremiah Burtch - 16/8 (Wheat arrears 1 May 1751). [ELP box 129].
Jeremiah Burtch was taxed in Beekman from 1743 to 1765 when the farm was listed under his son Increase.
His tax listings were £5 in both Feb. 1743/44 and 1744/45, £6 in Feb. 1746/7, £1 in Feb. 1753, £1 in June 1758, £2 in 1760 and £4 in June 1763.
In 1767 his son Jeremiah was no longer listed as "Jr." which would indicate that Jeremiah Sr. d. shortly before 1767. Henry Beekman noted in a letter of 9 Jan. 1753 that William Lanphier was in possession of the farm of Jeremiah Burtch. [SBP I:761]. A Jeremiah Butch d. in 1762 in the F & I War in NY, possibly a nephew, but probably not this man who would be about 68 years old. [NYMR 529].
Jeremiah had a twin named Joseph who only lived to be a week old.
