A genealogy written between 1897 and 1904 by the wife of a seventh generation descendant, Nancy Bemis (Mrs. Orville K.) Butterfield says that "Joseph Butterfield, b. 1649/ m. Lydia Ballard 1674." She listed six children of Joseph and Lydia Butterfield: "Joseph, b 1680/ Benj. Butterfield b. 1683-1685/ Tabitha b. 1687/ [twins] Isaac b. & d. 1689 [and] Jacob b. 1689/ and Anna b. ____."

Another source published in New York in 1912 also lists only the first six of Joseph's children. A genealogy published in 1976 in Westmoreland, New Hampshire, gives Joseph and Lydia three additional children: Grace, and the twins, Abraham and Abigail.
