Joseph was a chaplain in the Revolutionary War.
Joseph Byington was elected at the first town meeting of Bristol on 13Jun1785 to the first board of selectmen and as the first town clerk; he was also a lieutenant in the 6th Company, Second Continental Regiment, which marched to Boston 18May1775 under the command of Gen Joseph Spencer. (source: Epaphroditus Peck's "History of Bristol, Connecticut") Joined the Congregational Church in Bristol 27Mar1777 (per church records). He was also a representative from Bristol to the Connecticut General Assembly in 1788.
