Note that in the 1600's the ancestors of the Collard family were run out of France by King Louis XIV due to religious convictions. Some settled in England while others made Ireland their home in the early 1700's.

When some immigrated to the colonies they settled in Virginia before the American Revolutionary War. The first Collards followed Pioneer John Lewis (Irish John) who opened what is now Augusta County, Virginia, to settlement.

Joseph H. [Joseph I] was one of these settlers and he also fought in the Am. Revolutionary War.
