Joseph Dunklin Sr. was from Coleraine, Londonderry, in Northern Ireland. In 1748 or 1755 he set sail for America from London, England. On the ship he met the young and beautiful Jean Warthen (Wathen, Wathin, etc.) from Wales. After their shipboard romance, they married in Charleston, South Carolina, abt. 1756 when they landed.
They settled at Four Holes Swamp, St. Matthews Parish, near Bonneau, Berkley County, South Carolina. Four Hole Swamp is about 40 miles above Charleston. They had four sons and three daughters.
Joseph Sr. was appointed Inquirer and Collector of St. Mathews Parrish, including Orangeburg Township, on Jan. 16, 1777, for the purpose of raising and collecting taxes.
Both served our country as patriots in the Revolutionary War. They furnished food for the army.
Joseph Sr. died at the close of the war and Jean died a few years later. In his will he divided his property evenly between his children. Of course, all his property belonged to his beloved wife, Jean, until her death. Joseph Sr. and Jean are buried in the Old Dunklin Burying Ground near Four Hole Swamp.
