Joseph Flanders also took part in the scouting service in and around Salisbury,

as is seen from the Order Book of Capt. Henry True, Jr.:

"Conserning or scouting we intended to take turns round the town

but we found it wold nto attaine ye end; therfore on november

ye 11th 1702 Segt Will Osgood had orders to scout

with Joseph flanders John Ring tho. Morell & Nathll osgood &

to range the woods on ye back side powas hill & to

ye new medows & to batts hill or grape hill & to ye grate plaine & to folow his orders.

if ye meet wth any Indians to take y & not to kill them if posible

but to use them as kindly as they Cold & to Cary them to Maior noye;

& to give me intiligence if they se any thing more than ordanary that

so I might give the same to Colo. Pierce, etc"

the need to maintain a garrison against the Indians at this time and shows

the peril to which the settlers of Salisbury were exposed:

& ye men ordered to doe ye worke at the several garrisons According to yr order
