A Patriot of the American Revolution for North Carolina. DAR Ancestor # A201145
n 1784 both BENJAMIN GIST and his brother JOSHUA were members of the convention which met at Jonesboro, in which the plans to organize the independent State of Frankin were begun. -Remsey p. 288.
JOSEPH GIST, ALEX OUTLAW, SAMUEL WEAR and DANIEL KENNEDY were among the delegates to the first JONESBORO (Franklin) convention, elected from Green?? County. -Ramsey p. 286.
JOSHUA GIST, of SKVIER County, was married and had a family.
SARAH GIST married JOHN BROWN, Jerferson Co., 1793, was his daughter.
JOSEPH GIST, REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIER AND HIS FAMILY
JOSEPH GIST was a revolutionary soldier, and in 1832 was allowed a pension. His application states:
JOSEPH GIST, born 1751, died in Monroe County, Ky., July 30, 1844. Enlisted April 1, 1877 and served six months as an Indian spy in Col.JOHN SEVIER'S N. C. Regiment, while living in Greene County, later TENNESSEE. He enlisted in 1779 and served three months in CAPT. JAMES STINSON'S Company, COL. JOHN SEVIER'S Regiment. He was in several skirmishes with Indians. Enlisted about September, 1780 and served three months as an Indian spy in CAPT. THOMAS WOOD'S Company, Col. Sevier's N. C. Regiment He was allowed a pension September 3, 1832 and was then 81 years old, and living in MONROE COUNTY, Kentucky. He married Jan. 7, 1816 (his second marriage no doubt) ELIZABETH (Betsy) SPRINGER. She was allowed a pension August 2, 1853. She was then 65 years old and living in MONROE County, Kentucky. They had three children:
