• HARDING, MARTHA - Widow Harding was on the 25 March 1633 tax list for the minimum amount, nine shillings. Martha Harding died before 28 October 1633 and John Doane presented her inventory and was administrator on behalf of her son (PCR 1:18) Her inventory was valued at a little over L20, and among her debts were L20 to three of her husband's brothers in England. It was noted that she died without a will, leaving one son to the custody of Mr. John Doane (MD 1:82-83), and Dawes-Gates 2:302 gives good reason to think that she may have been Doane's sister. Her son, Joseph Harding, later married Bethiah Cooke (PCR 8:27), daughter of Josiah Cooke, q.v. There were other Hardings in the area, such as the John Harding on the 1643 ATBA for Duxbury; the Phebe Harding who married John Browne on 26 march 1634 PCR 1:26); and the Winifred Harding who married Thomas Whitton on 22 November 1639 (PCR 1:134); but no relationship is known with Martha Harding. _________________

John Doane

• John Doane John Doane (c.1590 - 1685/6) He arrived in Plymouth Colony on an unknown ship sometime between 1628 and 1632. During his long life he is considered a person of note in Plymouth Colony serving in many government capacities associated with the colony government, such as government committees and deputy for Plymouth as well as Assistant Governor in 1632/33. He left government service for a time in the 1630s to serve as deacon in the Plymouth Church.[1]
• John Doane stated he was born in England and in his 1678 will he stated he was age about eighty-eight years of age making his birth year being about 1590. Nothing else is known of his English ancestry. There is no record of John Doane being in Leiden, Holland, although he was a Plymouth church deacon.[2]

• Per records of the time, Martha Harding died before October 28, 1633 with John Doane presenting her inventory and also was administrator on behalf of her son. She died without a will, leaving one son in the custody of Mr. John Doane and it has been thought she may have Doane's sister.[7]

• John Doane's earliest known wife was called Ann in a 1648 deed, but in a later deed (of 1659) his wife was Lydia.[2]
• John Doane married:
• 1. Ann (poss. Perkins) by 1625 and had five children. She died on June 1, 1654 and was buried in Cove Burying Ground, Eastham.
• 2. Lydia ___ by April 1, 1659 and died between May 18, 1678 and December 23, 1681. Her burial place is unknown.
• Children of John and (probably) Ann Doane:
  • Lydia born about 1625 and died by June 1677. She married Samuel Hicks in Plymouth on September 11, 1645 and had two children. Their burial places are unknown.
  • Abigail was born about 1631 and died in Norwich, Connecticut on January 23, 1734/5. Her burial place is unknown. She married Samuel Lothrop as his 2nd wife in the early 1690s, but had no children. He died about 1700.
  • John was born about 1635 and died on March 15, 1707/8. He was buried in Cove Burying Ground, Eastham.
  • He married:
  • 1. Hannah Bangs in Eastham April 30, 1662 and had six children.
  • 2. Rebecca Pettee on January 14, 1684/5.
  • Daniel was born about 1637 and died in Eastham, Mass. On December 20, 1712. He was buried in Cove Burying Ground, Eastham.
  • He married:
  • 1. (poss. Constance Snow) by 1669 and had nine children.
  • 2. Hepsibah (Cole) Crispe after July 28, 1682 and had one daughter.[2]
  • Ephraim was born about 1642 and died in 1700 in Eastham, Mass. He was buried in Cove Burying Ground, Eastham, as was his 2nd wife Mary.
  • He married:
  • 1. Mercy Knowles at Eastham, Mass. On February 5, 1667/8 and had eight children.
  • 2. Mary (Smalley) Snow as her second husband after April 1692 but had no children. She died in 1703.[3]
• In his will dated May 18, 1678, inventory taken May 21, 1686 and sworn by Abigail Doane May 29, 1686, he named his "loving wife," daughter Abigail, sons John, Daniel and Ephraim, and granddaughter Margaret Hicks, and left the remainder of his estate to "all my sons and daughters". He described himself in the will as "aged eighty and eight or there about" and in the inventory he was said to have died February 21, 1685/86, "aged about a hundred years" - a typical overstatement of age which occurred in those times.[6]
• John Doane died in Eastham, Massachusetts on February 21, 1685/6. He was buried in Cove Burying Ground in Eastham where his tombstone is existent as well as memorials in his honor.[6]
• In 1869 the Doanes erected a memorial stone on the site of Deacon John's house in Eastham, Massachusetts. That site, overlooking Nauset Bay, is now a part of the Cape Cod National Seashore. In 1906, a perpetual lot in the Old Town Cove burial ground, including the grave site of Deacon Daniel Doane, a son, was set aside. The following year a memorial stone with a bronze tablet honoring Deacon John Doane was erected. In 1994 a granite stone and bronze marker commemorating the 350th anniversary of the founding of Nauset was dedicated at the homesite.

• Note. The widow Martha Harding was taxed in Plymouth in 1632, and was living there in March, 1633. It has been suggested that she was a sister of Mr. John Doane. Martha Harding's inventory was presented Oct. 28, 1633. It states that she died without will, leaving a son in the custody of Mr. John Done, in behalf of whom Mr. Done is allowed to administer. Her estate amounted to £20. 18.s 6. Her debts to £33. 9s 1. John Done charges her estate with £9. 9.s 1 money lent to, or paid out for Martha Harding. Phoebe Harding married John Brown, Jr., of Duxbury, Mar. 26, 1634. Winnifred Harding married Thomas Whitten in 1639. John Harding was probably the "Capt. Harding" sent to treat with the Narragansetts in 1645. In 1652, Joseph Harding of Eastham was presented to the Grand Enquest, "for carrying an Indian's gun into the smith's to bee mended in his uncle's name." Would John Doane have paid out over nine pounds for the widow Harding, if she was not a relative? Unless a relative, would Martha Harding have left a son to the custody of John Doane when she evidently had other children in Plymouth grown to manhood and womanhood? _________________________________

Biography

“Martha Harding, widow, the immigrant ancestor, was in Plymouth as early as 1632. She died in 1633, leaving her son Joseph to the care of John Doane, probably her brother. It is believed that her husband came to Maine in 1623 with Governor Gorges, and when the colony was abandoned he took refuge at Plymouth, but he may have died before his family removed to Plymouth. It appears that the widow had previously committeed her elder son, John, to the care of John Doane."[1] "Joseph Harding, son of Martha Harding, was born about 1635. He was given into the care of Deacon John Doane by his mother, and lived with his guardian during his minority, at Duxbury and Eastham, Massachusetts. About 1650 he came to Braintree, taking possession apparently of lands inherited from his father and from time to time his name is found in the probate records from 1650 to 1660. On 3 June 1652 a complaint was filed against Joseph for “carrying an Indian’s gun unto the smith to be mended in his uncle’s name”.[2]

He married, April 4, 1660, Bethia, daughter of Josiah and Elizabeth (King) Cook, of Eastham, formerly of Plymouth, and grantee of Little Compton, Rhode Island. Joseph settled early at Eastham.”[1]

Joseph Harding and Bethiah Cook ware mareied the fourth Day of Apreill in the yeare one thousand Six hundered & Sixty. [3]

Joseph took the oath of allegiance in 1657 and was made a freeman in Eastham in 1664. In Mar. 1671/2 he was fined 10/ for abusing the constable. [4]

Josiah Cooke, Sr. mentions his son Joseph Harding and daughter Bethiah Harding as well as his grandsons Joseph, Josiah and Amaziah in his will dated 22 Sept. 1673.[5]

Bethia, her brother Josiah and their half-sister Miriam Deane all fought over the estate of their father Josiah Cooke. This was finally settled by the prerogative court in Barnstable on 31 May 1687: [6]

"Whereas there was great contest, varianc and strife betweene Josiah Cook, Bethiah Harding and Meriam Deane all of Eastham… about tuching or conserning the Estate of Josiah Cook of Eastham deceased that was Left after the death of Elizabeth the relict of sd Josiah Cook deceased.

Know all whome it may conserne that the parties at variance as above sd have agreed before the Prerogative Court held in Barnstable the 31st of May 1687. Clearly fairly and plainly as followeth, that the sd Josiah first above mentioned shall pay or cause to be paid unto Bethiah his sister the sd wife of Joseph Harding of Eastham… out of his own Estate the full sum of fifty shillings in good merchants pay to her or her order on or before the last day of November next ensuing the date above mentioned: and for the Estate of the said Josiah Cook deceased left after the death of the sd Elizabeth relict of sd Josiah Cook deceased, the sd Josiah Cook first above mentioned and the sd Bethiah his sister to have the first choise of fifty shillings thereof at the prise as the sd Estate is praised at and then the abovesd Meriam Deane to have the second choise of five pounds of said Estate as it is praized at and then the aforesaid Josiah Cook and sd Bethiah to have the 3d choise of fifty shillings more of sd Estate at the prise as abovesd and then the sd Meriam Deane to have the Choise of four pounds and three Shillinggs thereof at the prise aforesd and of all that of sd Estate that is left when the said Meriam Deane hath her due which is nine pounds and three shillings the rest to be equally devided between the sd Josiah Cook and his sister Bethiah the wife of the sd Joseph Harding."
