About Joseph Hyrum Holmes

Pioneer Resident Of Montpelier Dies

In the passing of Joseph Hyrum Holmes last Friday evening, Montpelier loses one of its long time residents. He was born in Montpelier March 7, 1867, when the town was only three years old. He is a son of James Holmes and Harriet Phelps Holmes. Except for short intervals his entire life was spent in and near Montpelier. As a boy and a man he has been a part of the life and growth of the community almost since its beginning. He attended the schools of the community and received what educational advantages it afforded. He also attended school in Logan for one winter. He served as a missionary for the Latter-Day Saints church in the Indian Territory for more than two years while he was a young man.

After returning from his mission he married Sarah Elizabeth Hill, whose birthplace was Madred Bend, Tennessee. They were married in the Salt Lake temple October 10, 1894. For many years he was employed by the Consolidated Wagon and Machine company. Later he served the city of Montpelier as the superintendent of water works for fourteen years. He resigned from the employment of the city and moved to Salt Lake City, where he lived for four years. When he again returned to Montpelier he was employed by the city schools from which position he retired because of failing health.
Besides serving on a foreign mission he was active in church work in other capacities. He was president of the Young Men's Mutual Improvement association and served on the Sunday School superintendency. He was a counselor to Bishop Thomas M. Mumford in the Montpelier Third ward, and served as a ward teacher. While living in Salt Lake City, he was a regular worker in the Temple.
Surviving him are his wife, Sarah Elizabeth Hill Holmes, two sons, James W. Holmes of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Waldo H. Holmes of San Francisco, California, and one daughter, Mrs. Sidney E. Burgoyne of Montpelier, Idaho. There survive nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, one brother, Will R. Holmes of Salt Lake City, Utah, and one sister, Mrs. Effie Hibbert of Los Angeles.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the L. D. S. Third ward chapel with Bishop John H. Teuscher conducting. The opening song, "Prayer Perfect," was by a quartet comprised of Grant Passey, Max Haddock, Paul Haddock and G. W. Staker; invocation, President Walter Hunzeker; vocal duet, "I Know That My Redeemer Lives," Wesley R. Baker and Roger D. Burgoyne; speaker, Bishop Teuscher; vocal solo, "Open the Gates of the Temple," Max Haddock; speaker, Judge Jesse P. Rich of Logan; vocal solo, "Lead Me All the Way," Mr. Baker; speaker, Charles Teuscher of Arco; vocal solo, "Going Home," Mr. Burgoyne; benediction, Arthur P. Sorenson. Accompanists were Mrs. Ben L. Slack, Mrs. Emery Mumford and Mrs. Elmer Burgoyne.
Interment was in the Montpelier cemetery and the grave was dedicated by President Sidney E. Burgoyne. The Matthews Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
A number of relatives and friends, including a brother, Will R. Holmes, and sister, Mrs. Effie Hibbert, gathered in Los Angeles for a service honoring the memory of Mr. Holmes at the same hour funeral services were being conducted in Montpelier.
