DEATH OF SARAH E HOLMES

Sarah Elizabeth Holmes, 91, a Montpelier resident for 65 years, died at 4:40 am Saturday at the home of her daughter and son in law, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney E Burgoyne, of causes incident to age. She was born March 17, 1868 at Madrid Bend, Tennessee the daughter of William and Sarah Muse Hill. Her father was a missionary Baptist minister, who lived at a number of places in Tennessee, Arkansas and Texas. At the age of 22 and following the death of her parents, she moved to Ardmore Oklahoma Indian Territory, where she lived with relatives. It was there she met her future husband, Joseph Hyrum Holmes, who was serving on a mission for the LDS Church in Indian Territory. Becoming a convert to the LDS Church, she moved to Montpelier in January 1894. When Mr. Holmes returned from his mission, the couple were married October 10, 1894 in the LDS Temple in Salt Lake City.

A woman who always had time to help the sick, she rendered outstanding service as a practical nurse during the 1918 flu epidemic of World War I. For years she assisted early Montpelier physicians in maternity cases. She worked in the Relief Society and Sunday School. She was a charter member and past president and active worker in the Montpelier Chapter of American War Mothers.

She was the last surviving member of 11 brothers and sisters, several of whom lived into the 90's. Her husband died January 16, 1948. An infant son preceded her in death. She is survived by two sons and one daughter, James W Holmes of Idaho Falls, Mrs. Sidney E (Beatrice) Burgoyne of Montpelier and Waldo H Holmes of San Francisco; nine grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

Services were Wednesday in the Third-Fifth ward with Bishop Philip Hulme of the Third ward conducting.
