Joseph Ketcham was born before 13 Apr 1649 in Southold, Long Island, New York (now Huntington, Suffolk Co., NY). [1] He was about seven years old when his father passed away. By the time he was thirteen, the family removed to Norwalk, Connecticut where he lived most of his life.

In 1701 he was in the service of the town of Norwalk and in 1705 he was elected a Selectman of the town. Joseph owned many large parcels of land in and around Norwalk. The Ketchums were members of the Congregationalist Church.

Joseph changed the spelling of the name to "Ketchum." many of his descendants use the surname Ketchum rather than Ketcham.

He passed away between the signing of his will, 4 May 1730 and the date it was proven, 3 July 1730. [2] He was buried at Norwalk. [3]

Joseph Ketchum was married to Mercy Lindall, daughter of Deacon Henry Lindall, on 3 Apr 1679 in Norwalk, Fairfield Co., Connecticut.[4], [5]

They had eight (8) children:

  1. Nathaniel Ketchum
  2. Sarah Ketchum
  3. Elizabeth Ketchum
  4. Captain Joseph Ketchum
  5. Hannah Ketchum
  6. Samuel Ketchum
  7. Deborah Ketchum
  8. John Ketchum

His wife, Mercy, predeceased him and he married Sarah. Sarah is mentioned in his will. Sarah may be the mother of some of the above children.

Will

Joseph signed his will on 4 May 1730. It was proved on 3 July 1730. It mentions wife Sarah, Executors eldest son Nathaniel and son Joseph. The will also mentions sons John and Samuel and daughters Elizabeth, wife of Moses Fountain, Deborah, wife of Samuel Clugston, and Hannah, wife of Daniel Olmsted of Ridgefield.
