About Joseph Meier Marx

GEDCOM Note

Joseph MARX would have been known as Joseph ARON under his patronymic surname. Another possibility is that Marx (Mardochai / Marcus) ARON was Joseph's brother, and he was named after their paternalgrandfather. Joseph's father Aron MARX was likely Aron, son of Marx

&nbsp

Joseph MARX's profession is the only one in the whole set of records that I was not certain about. "Gruenhandel"is a profession that no longer exists in Germany by that name. I checked for information on this trade in a 19th century dictionary and on lists of old German occupations. I also asked archivists and checked on Google (where there are many entries for "Gruenhandel", but all of them are for a firm that uses it in their company name). There is certainly an archivist somewhere who knows for sure,so I will keep asking around.

This may be a far stretch of the imagination, but logging could have led to paper, which in turn could have led to bookbinding. Both Aaron and Jennie listed their occupations in the US census' as "bookbinders".

&nbsp
The record from 1810 may have something to do with the fact that in 1810 Zuentersbach became part of the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt, a Vassal State of Napoleon. It remained part of the Grand Duchy until the end of 1813 when Frankfurt was occupied by allied troops. This was shortly after Napoleon's defeat at the Battle of Leipzig. Zuentersbach had been under French administration since 1806. Your family may have moved from Mittelsinn to Zuentersbach around this time, because it was close by ( 9.6 miles), and restrictions on Jews had been lifted under Napoleon
