About Joseph L Morrow
Joseph L. Morrow was a small child when his parents came to the farm in Perkins, and only 10 years old when his mother died in 1856, when she was only 36 years old. He was 16 when the Civil War started and was impatient to join in the conflict. In the winter of 1863 he inlisted as a private in Comp.G. 123rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, where he served until the close of the war. He served under Generals Sigel, Hunter, Sheridan and Grant. For much of the time he was engaged in military operations in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia and later his regiment was with the army of the James for 6 months. He also fought in the battle of Winchester, Newmarker, Five Forks, Opequan, Cedar Creek, and the siege of Petersburg. Three days before the surrender of General Lee, Joseph and his entire comany were taken captive by the enemy,at Farmville, Virginia, being released only after the surrender was confirmed.
After the war he was active in the Grand Army of the Republic. He returned to Erie County where he remained until 1870 when he moved to St. Louise Missouri. In 1882 he returned to Erie county where he bought a small homestead.He was a republican all his life and along with his wife was held in high esteem by all who knew them. As a young man he married Annetta Hopkins and they are the parents of 3 children Marion, who married Otto Erickson of Cleveland, and Olive who married Thomas Mays of of Akron, Ohio. John W. who had died. After Annetta died he remarried, Miss Susan J. Banks, who was born and reared in Perkins Tw. and is the daughter of William Banks, they had one child, Vincent.
Joseph died 12 Feb. 1937 at the home of his son Vincent on Bogart Rd. in Perkins. He and his family are buried in Perkins Tw. Cem. Sect.SW23

Fought in the Battle of Winchester, Five Forks, Hatchers Run, Cedar Creek and Farmville.
Stood guard over President Lincoln remains after his assasination while they lay in state at Columbus Ohio.
