About Joseph PORTER

GEDCOM Note

After the death of Catherine in 1823 Joseph married Sarah (ALEXANDER) LLOYD the widow of Ezekiel LLOYD and Catherine ALEXANDER' s sister. The grave stones of this family were removed the burial ground on the family farm to the Delaware Cemetary in Christian Co., Mo. and reset in conrete.

Joseph PORTER was a First Lieutenant in the same company of his brother Captain John PORTER, West Tennessee Militia in the War of 1812 and was wounded at the battle of Taledega.

In 1832 Joseph and Sarah PORTER migrated to Greene Co., Mo., where he purchased land from the Delaware Indians and established a home were he lived out the rest of his life.

He is said to have shot the first beaver taken in Greene County. He was known for his jovial nature and stock of good stories. At seventy-two years of age he boasted he boasted of his markmanship and said he could drop a "Buck" at a reasonable distance. At that time he was cultivating a farm of about 100 acres. In addition he had a business of hauling Bacon to Arkansas to sell at a reasonable price.

Will of Joseph PORTER, Greene Co., Mo., dated 17 Dec. 1852, Filed for probate 22 Dec 1852
I, Joseph Porter, of the County of Greene and state of Missouri doe hereby make and pubish this my last will and testament as follows to wit.
1st. I desir that my funeral expense's and all other debts be first paid and then

2nd. I give and bequeathunto my daughter Margaret Porter one half of all this tract of land whitch my mantion is that layes on the same side of the river that the said mansion is and the following personal property to wit one gray mare called Helen and the three choice Cows and as many beds and as many bed-cloths as she wants and one half a forty acer land warrant that I wish located on a forty acers that I have improvement on.

3rd. I give and bequeath to my daughter Martha Ann Howard one half of all my land that is on this side of the river that my farm layes on and the following personal property to wit a gray filly called Tamer and all her mothers clothes and one half of the forty acers that have improved on.

4th. I give to my grandson Joseph Porter Meritt all the land that I have on the other side of the river from and the following personal property to wit one sorrel horse called Hickory.

5th. I give my grandson William Meritt one gray filly called Nell.

6th. I give to my daughter Lilly Frizzell five dollars in cash having given her all the balance that I intento in advance.

7th. I give and bequeth unto the heirs of Mary Hall, my daugter five dollars in cash, having given my daughter Mary in advance all the balance I intend her.
8th. I desir that all the balance of my personal property be sold at public sail.

9th. I give and bequeth unto my grandson Joseph Porter Sanford and my grandaughter Sarah Ann Sanford one hundred dollars in cash each to be paid out of sail money if any in equal shares.

I do hereby appoint Frances E. Howard the Executor of this my last will and testament in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 17th dat of December one thousand eight hundred and fifty two.
