About Joseph Pratt
Calverly is solid with Pratts, mostly related to each other, and more than one Joseph.
BIRTH & BAPTISM
Name: Joseph Pratt
Event Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: Jan 1778
Baptism Place: Calverley, St Wilfrid, Yorkshire, England
Parish as it Appears: Calverley, St Wilfrid
Mother: Sarah Pratt
See docs
Joseph was born 1778 at Calverley. The Church of England recorded the name of one parent, usually the father. Joseph's has his mother as Sarah. Since everyone knew everyone else in the village, this might imply that Joseph's father was also Joseph, or that his father had died, Sarah was unmarried, or nothing at all. There is no note that he is illegitimate. See docs
[A tree in Ancestry has him born 1788 at Budleigh, Devon. Unlikely because he would have been 14yrs when he married Hannah, and it would have been very unusual for Joseph to go far from home to find a wife. Not necessary when there is a perfectly acceptable baptism at Calverley]
MARRIAGE
In 3 May 1802 Joseph married Hannah Hollings at St Wilfred's. Name: Joseph Pratt Event Type: Marriage Marriage Date: 3 May 1802 Marriage Place: Calverley, St Wilfrid, Yorkshire, England Parish as it Appears: Calverley, St Wilfrid Spouse: Hannah Hollings
CENSUS 1841 census, Top of Town, Calverley, Bradford, Yorkshire:
James Pratt, 63 yrs, born 1778 in Yorkshire; Hannah Pratt, 60 yrs born 1781, Yorkshire; Isaac Pratt, 25 yrs born 1816, Yorkshire; Ann Pratt, 20 yrs, born 1821, Yorkshire; Samuel Hughes, 21 yrs, born 1820, Yorkshire.
Joseph is recorded as a cloth manufacturer, the same industry as James. Most of the families in the area are also engaged in cloth/clothing manufacture or sale, etc. This is near the peak of the manufacture of textiles in the area.
This generation of Pratts are going to church at St Wilfred's Anglican, so it might have been James who became Baptist after the birth of his first child.
James and his wife and children are also still living in Calverley for this census, and there are other Pratts in the village.
DEATH & BURIAL
Name: Joseph Pratt Gender: Male Burial Date: 10 Jul 1824 Burial Place: Calverley, York, England OR Name: Joseph Pratt Age: 72 Birth Year: abt 1776 Burial Date: 18 May 1848 Burial Place: Calverley, St Wilfrid, Yorkshire, England Parish: Calverley, St Wilfrid
[Possible, but I believe the will and executor being James Pratt, tilts the preference to 1824]
OR
Name: Joseph Pratt Gender: Male Burial Date: 5 Feb 1861 Burial Place: Calverley, York, England [Unlikely]
Apart from his burial in 1824 the evidence for Joseph's death is an 1825 will, leaving 40 pounds. He is the only Joseph Pratt dying at Calverley, and the Administrator is James Pratt, so I believe it very probable this is our man. See docs
[The Ancestry tree mentioned above has him dying Jan 1858 in Suffolk. Not impossible, but pretty unlikely]
