About Joseph Rogers

Biography

Joseph Rogers was born February 1, 1667/8 at Eastham, Plymouth Colony, New England (later Massachusetts), the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Snow) Rogers.[1][2] He was the grandson of Lt. Joseph Rogers, born 1602 in England, a passenger aboard the Mayflower in 1620, founding the Plymouth Colony in New England.[3]

Joseph Rogers married Prudence, whose maiden name is unknown, perhaps in Eastham or Truro on Cape Cod, Plymouth Colony, later part of the Massachusetts Bay Province, by 1691 (birth of first child).[3]
They had 3 children born Eastham:[4]

Sarah Rogers, b. 20 Nov 1691; living 22 May 1696; n.f.r..[3][5]
Elizabeth Rogers, b. 22 Sep 1693; did she m. 1722 Thomas Mayo Jr.?[3][5]
Joseph Rogers Jr., b. 1694-96; living 22 May 1696.[3]
Joseph Rogers Sr. died at Eastham on April 24, 1696, of a "Strange distemper of which he had long lain Sick." (Deacon John Payne).[6] He was only 28 years old. His estate was settled May 22, 1696, divided among his widow, Prudence Rogers, and their 3 young children: Joseph, Sarah and Elizabeth.[7][8]

On October 25, 1700 Prudence Rogers remarried to Malchiel Atwood,[9] with whom she had 6 additional children in Truro.[10] Prudence is said to have died on July 28, 1713 in Truro, giving birth to her last child, daughter Apphia Atwood.[11] Her death is not, however, found in the town's records.
