GEDCOM Note
In the early 1700s, the French built a chain of forts to link New France in Canada with Louisiana. All of these forts were along the Mississippi River and its upper tributaries. Joseph Roy began his move to the South at an early age. When he was 27 years old, he married Madeleine Perthuis in the Detroit Territory area. They had three children while living there: Joseph, Pierre, and Mary. Their son, Joseph, lived only two days. Joseph and Madeleine worked their way down the chain of forts until they arrived at Fort Kaskaskia in the southern Illinois Territory, where Madeleine died. Joseph then began his way down the chain of forts with Pierre, his son. Years later, information for the Detroit Region tells of his daughter Mary Roy's marriage to John-Baptist Durand on Sept 5, 1770 at Assumption Sandwich Fort in the Michigan Territory. Joseph Roy arrive at Point Coupee, La. Post in 1743. He married Perrine Lacour there on Jan 30 1744. They had a very meager beginning there as the Census of 1745 shows that they have their first son (another Joseph), 2 cows, 2 hogs, 2 muskets, 4 bags of powder, 10 bags of lead balls, all on 8 acres of land. They raised 11 children at Point Coupee Post. Joseph's son Pierre, who was born in Detroit, died on Oct 6, 1748 when he was 10 years old. He was buried at Point Coupee. Joseph was the first Roy to arrive at Point Coupee. He died there on Oct 10, 1761 when he was 52 years old.
