Joseph Sedgbear, Sr.

Joseph Sedgebear Sr., son of Amos Sedgebear and Hannah Taylor Sedgebear married Ann Hopkins in 1803. In 1805 during the Boer Wars, Joseph joined the Crown's military. Joseph served as a king's foot guard from 1805 until his death in 1809 as a result of injuries sustained. Ann received Joseph's pension from the crown. Joseph and Ann had two children, Joseph C. Sedgebear (Sedgebeer) and Elizabeth Sedgebear. Throughout this research the name Sedgebeer has been found with several different spellings most notably Sedgbear, Sadgebury, Sedgbere and Sedgebury. Joseph spelled his name both as Sedgebere and Sedgebear, while his brother James was christened with the last name Sedgbury.
