About Joseph Smith, of Oyster River
From History of the town of Durham, New Hampshire (Oyster River Plantation) with genealogical notes, by Everett S. Stackpole and Lucien Thompson. Published 1913 by Published by vote of the town in [Durham? N.H.] . Volume 2. page 330
There was a George Smith, son of Thomas, who died in Ipswich in 1661 and another George Smith who died 15 Dec 1674. His will mentions wife, unnamed, and children, Thomas, Samuel, Sarah, Newman, Rebecca, Elizabeth and Joanna.
Not a shred of evidence has been found that George Smyth was the father of James Smith and Joseph Smith of Oyster River, nor that the two last were related at all.
- comment: however, it appears that DNA test results match between George & Joseph. See ftDNA Smith group R-M269
