JOSEPH VAN SWEARINGEN (Gerret, Thomas, Van) born 9 Mar 1720, Queen Anne Parish, Prince Georges Co, MD, died 1794, Abbeville Co, SC (will follows).I believe Joseph married three times.Two sons died in 1774/75 and they were probably born in the 1750's.Joseph married Hannah Williams Taylor, widow of James Taylor, probably after his arrival in SC about 1768.Joseph's last wife was Mary ____ who was named in his will. Joseph settled near John Morris' purchase in Long Canes settlement in Ninety-Six Dist, SC, granted in 1760 to Arthur Donaldson. He received a grant of 400 acres "on Long Canes Granville Co", 29 Apr 1768.Joseph witnessed a deed in Ninety-Six in May 1770.He appears in the 1790 census of Ninety-Six Dist, p60, 1 m 45+, 1 f.

Will of JOSEPH VAN SWEARINGEN, Abbeville Co, SC, signed 14 Jul 1794, proved 2 Oct 1794 ( Abbeville Co, SC) In the name of God amen.

I Joseph Van Swearingen of Abbeville County, being in sound mind, and memory, and considering the uncertainty of human life, do make and ordain this my will and Testement in manner and form as follows.

1st I give up my soul to God, which is his due, in hopes of a blessed resurrection thru the merits of my dear redeemer. 2ndly. I dispose of what it has been his (mind?) to bless me as follows, To Witt, Item I give and bequeath to my grandson Robert Shanklin, all my land that I possess at this time or have any claim to, to Him and his heirs forever but with this particular proviso that my wife Mary Swearingen shall have the one third of the said land, during her natural life unmolested by anyone, and at her decease he is to take possession of the whole, Item I hand my dear and beloved wife Mary all my personal Estate during her natural life and at her decease, it is my will desire, that it be equally divided between my two daughters, Sarah Pikins, Hannah Shanklin, Matthew Thompson, Joseph Thompson, and John Thompson, That is to say, one third to my daughter Sarah Pekins, and her heirs forever, one third to my daughter Hannah Shanklin and her heirs forever, and the other one third remaining to be equally divided between my three grandsons Matthew Thompson, Joseph Thompson, and John Thompson, to them and their heirs forever, Item give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth Barrett one dollar to her and her heirs forever, Item I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary Thompson one dollar to her and heirs forever, Item I appoint and constitute my beloved wife Mary Swearingen my Executrix together with my son in Law Thomas Shanklin, my Executor, to this my last will and Testiment revoking and annulling all wills, whatsoever by me heretofore made or Witness my Hand and seal this Fourteenth day of July one thousand seven Hundred and Ninety four.

June 01 1790 - 1801 in Hagerstown, "Washington County, Maryland" or Ringgold, Alexandria County, Maryland. He married (1) ELIZABETH WALKER February 14, 1714/15 in Saint Barnabas Church, Prince George, Maryland, daughter of CHARLES WALKER and REBECCA ISACKS. She was born December 22, 1695 in Patuxent Hundred, Anne Arundel, Maryland, and died Bef. 1784 in Ringgold Alexandria County, Maryland (now D.C.). He married (2) PRISCILLA ? Aft. 1722 in Maryland.
