About Joseph

He was a carpenter. As the father of Jesus, he is honored as a saint by Catholic Christians. His feast day is May 1. His descendants were called the Desposyni ("belonging to the Master"), and were leaders of the early church.

Two genealogies are given in the Bible for Jesus, one in the Gospel of Matthew and one in the Gospel of Luke. Matthew's is traditionally considered to be the genealogy of St. Joseph. Sextus Julius Africanus (2nd century) says the heirs of Jesus took pride in their Davidic descent and circulated this genealogy. However, it is problematic for a number of reasons. First, Matthew gives only 25 generations from David to Jesus, far too few to span the 1,000 years between them.

Secondly, the genealogy seems to be in the form of mnemonic device, and may be artificial. Matthew counts 42 generations from Abraham to Jesus in three sections of 14 (Abraham to David, David to the Exile, and the Exile to Jesus). The number is suspect because 14 is the numerical equivalent in Hebrew of the name David (DVD). The author might have been working from a schema whereby there would be six "weeks" of generations (14+14+14) from Adam to the birth of Messiah at the beginning of the seventh, or Sabbath, "week".

Finally, the genealogy contains a number of mistakes. In the second section, a comparison with 1 Chronicles 3:4-5, 10-24 shows that Matthew has omitted four generations, so his list should contain 18. In the third section, Matthew counts 14 generations, but only gives 13. The missing name in this section seems to have been Abner.

Sources Disagree about Who his Father was:

In the Christian New Testament Matthew 1; 15-16 [15 Elihud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.]

Matthew as a Secondary Source: The current scholarly view is that it was written in the last quarter of the first century by an anonymous Jew familiar with technical legal aspects of scripture https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_Matthew

In the Christian New Testament Luke 3:23-38: [23 Jesus, when he began his ministry, was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli, 24 the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph]

Luke as a Secondary Source: Most modern scholars agree that the main sources used for Luke were a), the Gospel of Mark, b), a hypothetical sayings collection called the Q source, and c), material found in no other gospels, often referred to as the L (for Luke) source...The most probable date for its composition is around AD 80–110, and there is evidence that it was still being revised well into the 2nd century. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_of_Luke

The Siblings of Jesus:

In the Christian New Testament:
Mark 6:3 [Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.]
Matthew 13:55 [55 “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas?]

Mark as a Secondary Source: The Gospel of Mark is likely written about c. AD 66–70. Critical consensus views the author as knowing very little about the geography of Palestine and being unacquainted with Jewish customs - so probably a Hellenized Jew who lived outside of Palestine. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_the_Evangelist

Wikipedia: Saint Joseph

Saint Joseph (also known as Joseph of the House of David, Joseph the Betrothed, or Joseph the Worker) is known from the New Testament as the husband of Mary, mother of Jesus.

The genealogy in the Gospel of Matthew says that Joseph's father was called Jacob,[Mt. 1:16] but according to the genealogy in the Gospel of Luke, Joseph was a son of Heli.[Lk. 3:23]

Before having Mary as his fiancee, Joseph already had a wife (who died) and sons of his own.

...the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream and said to him: "Joseph, son of David, have no fear about taking Mary as your wife. It is by the Holy Spirit that she has conceived this Child. She is to have a Son and you are to name Him Jesus because He will save His people from their sins." When Joseph awoke he did as the angel of the Lord had directed him and received her into his home as his wife. He had no relations with her at any time before she bore a Son, whom he named Jesus. (From the Bible, the Book of Matthew, Chapter 1, Verses 20-21 and 24-25)

In those days Caesar Augustus published a decree ordering a census of the whole world. This first census took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria. Everyone went to register, each to his own town. And so Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to David's town of Bethlehem--because he was of the house and lineage of David--to register with Mary, his espoused wife, who was with Child.

While they were there the days of her confinement were completed. She gave birth to her first-born Son and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes and laid Him in a manger because there was no room for them in the place where travelers lodged. (From the Bible, the Book of Luke, Chapter 2, Verses 1-6)

...the angel of the Lord suddenly appeared in a dream to Joseph with the command: "Get up, take the Child and His mother, and flee to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you otherwise. Herod is searching for the Child to destroy Him." Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother and left that night for Egypt. He stayed there until the death of Herod, to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I have called My Son."

...after Herod's death, the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt with the command: "Get up, take the Child and His mother, and set out for the land of Israel. Those who had designs on the life of the Child are dead." He got up, took the Child and His mother, and returned to the land of Israel. He heard, however, that Archelaus had succeded his father Herod as king of Judea, and he was afraid to go back there. Instead, because of a warning received in a dream, Joseph went to the region of Galilee. There he settled in a town called Nazareth. In this way what was said through the prophets was fulfilled: "He shall be called a Nazorean." (From the Bible, the Book of Matthew, Chapter 2, Verses 13-15 and 19-23)
