Joseph

He was a carpenter. As the father of Jesus, he is honored as a saint by Catholic Christians. His feast day is May 1. His descendants were called the Desposyni ("belonging to the Master"), and were leaders of the early church.

Two genealogies are given in the Bible for Jesus, one in the Gospel of Matthew and one in the Gospel of Luke. Matthew's is traditionally considered to be the genealogy of St. Joseph. Sextus Julius Africanus (2nd century) says the heirs of Jesus took pride in their Davidic descent and circulated this genealogy. However, it is problematic for a number of reasons. First, Matthew gives only 25 generations from David to Jesus, far too few to span the 1,000 years between them.

Secondly, the genealogy seems to be in the form of mnemonic device, and may be artificial. Matthew counts 42 generations from Abraham to Jesus in three sections of 14 (Abraham to David, David to the Exile, and the Exile to Jesus). The number is suspect because 14 is the numerical equivalent in Hebrew of the name David (DVD). The author might have been working from a schema whereby there would be six "weeks" of generations (14+14+14) from Adam to the birth of Messiah at the beginning of the seventh, or Sabbath, "week".

Finally, the genealogy contains a number of mistakes. In the second section, a comparison with 1 Chronicles 3:4-5, 10-24 shows that Matthew has omitted four generations, so his list should contain 18. In the third section, Matthew counts 14 generations, but only gives 13. The missing name in this section seems to have been Abner.

Saint Joseph (also known as Joseph of the House of David, Joseph the Betrothed, or Joseph the Worker) is known from the New Testament as the husband of Mary, mother of Jesus.

The genealogy in the Gospel of Matthew says that Joseph's father was called Jacob,[Mt. 1:16] but according to the genealogy in the Gospel of Luke, Joseph was a son of Heli.[Lk. 3:23]

Before having Mary as his fiancee, Joseph already had a wife (who died) and sons of his own.

...the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream and said to him: "Joseph, son of David, have no fear about taking Mary as your wife. It is by the Holy Spirit that she has conceived this Child. She is to have a Son and you are to name Him Jesus because He will save His people from their sins." And so Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to David's town of Bethlehem--because he was of the house and lineage of David--to register with Mary, his espoused wife, who was with Child.
