About Josephine Archange Balfour
Josephine Archange Brodhead
Josephine Balfour was the daughter of Col. Thornton Fleming Brodhead (1820-1862) and Archange Macomb (1818-1891), both of Grosse Ile, Michigan.
Col. Brodhead served as a lieutenant and and adjutant in the 15th U.S. Infantry, U.S. Army, during the Mexican War. He served under Gen. General Winfield Scott. He was also brevetted captain for gallant conduct and conspicuous bravery in the engagements of Contreras and Cheru- busco, Mexico.
Col. Brodhead was fatally wounded on Aug. 30, 1862, at the Second Bull Run during the Civil War while leading a charge of the 1st Michigan Calvary to support retreating Union forces against the Confederates. He died on Sept. 30, 1862.
Archange Macomb was born to a long line of family members in the military and who had owned vast tracts of land in New York and Detroit.
Her father, John Wiliam Macomb (1782-1826), was killed by a bull on Grosse Ile. Her mother, Mary Jane Godet dit Marentette dit Francheville (1795-1852), drowned while aboard the Atlantic when it collided with the Ogdensburg on Lake Erie on Aug. 20, 1852.

Josephine married William Douglas Balfour (1851–1896), a newspaper publisher, legislator and supporter of female suffrage. Balfour was instrumental in the passage of legislation admitting women to the Law Society of Upper Canada and to the practice of law.

David Arthur Balfour was a municipal politician in Toronto. He was active in civic politics from 1939 until 1955. His son, Ronald, was killed in action on Dec. 31, 1943, while serving in the Canadian Army in Italy.
Josephine and William Balfour lived in Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada, for many years as William continued his publishing and legislative duties. Josephine sold the family newspaper, the Amherstburg Echo, following her husband's death in 1896. She then moved to York to be closer to her children.
