About Josephine Jarvis Hamblin
An article appeared in the Eatle-Advertiser Newspaper from Murray, Utah, on Thursday, December 26, 1974, with a headline reading: Double Birthdates To Be Noted By Hamblins: A double birthday celebration will be held on Sunday, December 29, to mark the birth dates of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Obed Hamblin of 5758 Lindon Lane in Murray. Mrs. Hamblin was born Josephine J. Milne on December 29, 1884, the daughter of David and Ann Jarvis Milne of St. George. Mr. Hamblin was born March 8, 1885, in Gunlock, Washington County, Utah, to Mr. and Mrs. Obed Edwin and Margaret Adair Hamblin. The two were married on June 12, 1907, in the St. George LDS Temple. They met in Nevada where he worked in mining towns. He was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad for 20 years and later worked wit crews in determining the proper site for the Hoover (Boulder) Dam to be built. Mr. Hamblin was acquainted wit Indians in Nevada and Southern Utah, and in 1917 was instrumental in stopping the killing of four Indians by persuading them to "talk out their problems with the U.S. Marshall."
The Hamblins came to Murray in 1929 and he worked for the government until his retirement in 1959. Mrs. Hamblin is th daughter of the late locally well-known Ann C. Milne who lived until she was 108 years of age. While a girl in St. George, Mrs. Hamblin was captain of a girls hardball baseball team which played in many nearby cities. She was also leader of a boys group in the Primary organization, took them on outings around the county and those now grown men greet her today as "their greatest Primary teacher." She was a cook at the S.L. County hopital when it was on 2100 South State Street, cooked for the USO an also at Hill Air Field. She is active in the new McMillan Daughters of the Utah Pioneers camp and has been captain of both it and the cottonwood camp.
Their children are: Mrs. William (Veva H.) Riding, Murray; Mrs. Grant (Edna Reynolds, Richland, Washington; Lee M., Murray and E. Jay, Bellview, Wahsington. Frank of Granger died in 1973 and two other children died in infancy.
Friends and relatives are being invited to call at the Hamblin home Sunday afternoon and evening and the family requests no gifts.
