RETIREMENT OF MR. ALLOTT.
His Honor the Chief Justice, addressing the Attorney-General, said, that as the business of the Court was now concluded, he wished to call attention to a subject which he thought ought not to be passed in silence at their separation this day. He alluded to the retirement of Mr. Joshua Allott, who had been allowed by the Governor, on the suggestion of the Judges, to retire from his situation, on an allowance equal to his full pay. This was to be looked upon as a testimonial from the Government, and from the Judges, and he believed he might speak for his predecessors - of the high estimation in which Mr. Allott was held - an estimation gained by the good character he had maintained while in this colony, and he, the Chief Justice believed, throughout his whole life. They were now taking leave of him, and he thought it only justice to express not in private, but this publicly, to say how much he had in his station in life gained esteem, and to show him as a worthy example to all men in all stations of society. For himself and his brother Judges he wished Mr. Allott a continuance of that health and prosperity his his station, which he had enjoyed during the twenty-one years he had been attached to the Supreme Court of this colony.
The Attorney_General said, he should not do justice to his own feelings if he did not at once concur in what had fallen from his Honor. For himself - for his brethren at the bar - for the whole profession, he might concur in all that had been said. A few years since the members of the profession had presented Mr. Allott with a testimonial of their esteem; and instead of diminishing, that esteem and regard had increased. He had himself known Mr. Allott now for fourteen years, and during that period Mr. Allott had earned his highest esteem. He wished him good health, that in retirement he might continue to enjoy the good opinion and esteem which on all hands his character and conduct had obtained for him.
The Court then retired.
