...THE BARNES FAMILY OF LONG ISLAND
The record of this family goes back to Edward Barnes of Eastwich and Lyme Regis, Dorset County, England, whose son, William, b. 1580 and d. 1657., was the father of the pioneers who later came to Long Island. William m. first, Thomasina Howell, dau. of Richard Howell, and m. second, Thomasina Shepard, dau. of Owen Shepard, Esq. By his first marriage he had five daus., whose names are unknown. By his second marriage he had five sons and eight daus. A tradition handed down by descendants is that three of the boys and two girls came to America, and settled at East and South Hampton, Long Island. These three sons, William, Charles and Joshua, settled there, but the families of the two daus. are not known. Owen, another brother, remained in England. A similarity in names might indicate that Thomas of New Haven was the missing son of this family, but there is nothing known of the ancestry of the latter, and he is recorded as an independent ancestor.
...JOSHUA BARNES OF EAST HAMPTON.
JOSHUA BARNES, brother of William and Charles, of East Hampton, as far as can be ascertained, left but two children (sons), and it is stated that he removed to lower Connecticut towns or to Westchester, N. Y. But the statement is doubted, and it is thought that it must have been a younger Joshua who thus removed, and assistance is desired in tracing this branch of the family. The statements here given are to furnish information for research, and for the purpose of connecting and verifying same.
Joshua Barnes was twice married, his first wife's name being Prudence, the second Amy. He d. about 1690. Children:
2 William Barnes.
3 Samuel Barnes.
