Joshua Knapp was born on 5 Jan 1635 in Watertown, Massachusetts. Joshua was probably a weaver by trade- indicated by his father willing him half of the gears to his loom.
Joshua married Hannah Close on 9 Jun 1657 in Stamford, Connecticut. Their second of eight children was Hannah. They moved to Greenwich in 1663. Joshua was made Proprietor at Greenwich 2-May-1664. He was admitted as a freeman in 1669 in the Connecticut Colony there.
He was one of two persons who made the bargain with the Indians when Bedford Parish was bought from them. The agreement between the Indians and the Stamford Colony was witnessed by Joshua Knapp and David Waterbury and signed by seven Indian Chiefs dated 12-23-1680.
He was one of the Committee of Sixteen to confer about the dividing line between Greenwich and Rye. Joshua bought land in Rye in 1681.
He died 27 Oct 1684 in Greenwich, Connecticut at age 49, leaving a “good estate” . Inventory of his estate in 1684 places its value at 54 pounds.
Hannah later married John Bowers. Hannah died on 6 Oct 1694 in Stamford. Her estate was settled in 1695.
