"They farmed in Buck creek Twp, Hancock Co; he was elected county sheriff, but that work displeased him, resigning after one year; also was Justice of Peace and township trustee.. The Pioneers of Madison & Hancock Co's IN, by Hardin 1895- p394

"One of the grand old pioneers, was born in IN in 1815, son of Joshua SHELBY. The family came to Buck Creek Twp, Hancock Co in 1834. The elder Joshua died in 1839.

Joshua Jr, was married to Nancy DUNN in 1839. She is the dau of Abner DUNN, an early citizan of the same locality.

Joshua, whose name heads this sketch, was elected Sheriff of Hancock Co in 1852 as a democrat but only served a few months. He served as Justice & Trustee for Buck Creek for several years. he was an honest man & well calculated for a pioneer life, caring little for superfluities of to-day. The following are the names of his children: Catherine E; Samuel N; Sarah; Lydia; Elvira; John F."

I am glad to give this family a sketch in the "Pioneer" Mr SHELBY died, I think, in 1884

[This article, typical of county histories, is full of errors! I have give the lineage correctly-Names of children are slightly different from what Bliss Morton gives- and the 1850 census for Hancock Co, names a son Calvin F and a daughter Mary E.]

He was married to Nancy DUNN on 26 Dec 1839 in Indianapolis, Marion Co, IN. According to Bliss Morton-his wife's ancestor- Nancy DUNN was born on 4 Oct 1813 in SC. From Old Southern Bible Records, by Lister-Gen Publ Co 1974- Bible of Samuel DUNN She died on 11 May 1889 in Union Co, IN.

1. Calvin D SHELBY was born in 1841 in Indianapolis, Marion Co, IN. He died on 11 Apr 1914 in IN.
2. Samuel N SHELBY was born on 1 Apr 1843 in Indianapolis, Marion Co, IN. The Pioneers of Madison & Hancock Co, IN, 1895- pp406, 409 History of Hancock Lodge # 101, F & A.M. [Masons] Among the members was: Samuel N SHELBY- Gave $5.00 towards building a new building...no date is given, but before 1895. [Bliss Morton gives some data on him-as shown]
3. Edward SHELBY was born in 1845 in Union Co, IN. Bliss Morton's dates varied slightly, in an earlier letter
4. Mary E SHELBY was born in 1846 in Indianapolis, Marion Co, IN. She died on 20 Jun 1864 in Union Co, IN. Buried next to father and her sister, Susannah
5. Sarah Jane SHELBY (born on 20 Mar 1848).
6. Elvina N SHELBY was born on 27 Jun 1854 in Indianapolis, Marion Co, IN. In a previous letter Bliss Morton gives her name as Elena L & born 1852 She died on 5 Jun 1877.
7. Lydia Ann SHELBY was born on 21 Sep 1856 in Indianapolis, Marion Co, IN. Bliss Morton gives date as 1852 in a previous letter- & this one is not clear. She died on 21 Mar 1915.
8. John F SHELBY was born in 1859 in Indianapolis, Marion Co, IN. In a previous letter Bliss Morton gives date as 1859- in this same letter names & dates of children are slightly different- He must have consulted a Bible or some other record and wrote again in to Charles E He was an Operated dairy in 1880 in Shelby Farm on Sugar Creek. He died in 1936 in Indianapolis, Marion Co, IN. The Pioneers of Madison & Hancock Co's - p 267
9. Catherine E? SHELBY. She's named in the Pioneers of Madison & Hancock Co- Bliss Morton does not name her.
10. Elvira? SHELBY. Pioneers book names her- Bliss Morton doesn't.
