Farmer in Spotsylvania County, VA. Enlisted on 4/25/1861 in Spotsylvania County, VA., he was mustered into "E" Co. VA 9th Cavalry as a Sergeant. Served with his brother Pvt. Thomas Benton Gayle. Promoted to 2nd Lieut 3/1/1862. He was dropped 4/26/1862 at Guinea Station, Caroline County, VA. during elections and reorganization of regiment.

Enlisted 10/23/1864 for the duration of the war by Walter E. Frankland in Fauquier County, VA., he was mustered into "F" Co., Mosby's Virginia 43rd Battalion Partisan Cavalry as a Private. Present on Oct-Dec 1864 Roll. He served with his brothers Pvt. Thomas Benton Gayle & Pvt. Mordecai Pitts Gayle.

Mosby's Cavalry Regiment, formerly the 43rd Battalion, was organized in December, 1864. The battalion was formed in June, 1863, with five companies, later increased to eight. The unit served behind Federal lines in Northern Virginia and was the most effective command of its kind. The enemy forces were never safe and the area became known as "Mosby's Confederacy".
