Includes NotesNotes for Josiah Handy: His brother James was living with Josiah at his death in 1919 Josiah, the fifth child, is the first Canadian-born of record. He was born on February 12, 1834 in Essa Township Simcoe County an died August 30, 1925 in Barrie, Ontario. The first record of land purchased by Charles was in 1832 and Josiah was born in 1834. Josiah farmed most of his life on Lot 12, Concession 1 of Essa Township just north of Alliston. His wife, Ellen Fitzpatrick, died shortly after the birth of Gertrude. The baby was raised by her maternal aunt and uncle while two older sisters, Maggie and Kate, stayed home to care for the rest of the family. Mary became a seamstress in Collingwood; John went into the ministry and moved to Arizona; Ellen married and raised a large family and Gertrude eventually became a secretary in Toronto. Maggie and Kate moved to Barrie with their father when he retired from the farm. It is said that, after the death of Josiah, the two women stayed together in the house on Henry Street but rarely, if ever, spoke to each other. Kate lived to the ripe age of 103 and Gertrude died at the age of 96. A couple of stories told us by Gertrude gives an insight into the true character of Josiah. In any quarrrels between his parents, he always took his mother's side against the very domineering Charles. On one trip to Toronto, Josiah bought a new buggy that had a covered top. He brought both buggies back to Essa with him and the next time Charles made one of his regular visits, Josiah took him around in the new buggy. Charles was very pleased that he didn't have to carry the old umbrella to protect his bald head from the sun. He drew out his cheque book and paid Josiah the price of the buggy ($80.00) and still allowed Josiah to keep it. For once, the son had the best of the deal with his father. Charles often bought farms and sold them at a profit to his sons but held a mortgage on them so he could keep a firm hand on the farming operations. Josiah finally got fed up with charles' interference and he went out and borrowed the money from a finance and loan company to pay off his father, then told him "Now I can farm this land as I wish". Charles must have had some respect for Josiah's level head because he appointed him as one of his executors along with George and Ben. They shared in the residue of his estate after all the debts were paid and bequests fulfilled. Josiah was a well-known figure in Barrie after his retirement, driving his buggy and carrying a black umbrella - he was just as bald as Charles had been. Josiah died in Barrie but is buried in Alliston bside his wife and daughters, Mary, Margaret and Catherine. In his 92nd year. An early pioneer of Essa Township. Parents Charles and Mary Handy. One of 12 children Married Ellen Fitzpatrick.

Obit, Barrie Examiner, 3 Sep 1925, p. 9 Death came to one of the pioneers of Essa Tp. on Sunday morning Aug.30 when Josiah Handy, for 70 years a resident of that township, passed away in his 92nd year. The end came quietly and suddenly as Mr. handy was eating his breakfast. For a week or two previously he had been in poor health but not regarded as serious. His family was known for longevity, his father living to 89 and 4 of his brothers over 80 and his surviving brother Henry being 80. His parents Charles and Mary Handy were among the earliest settlers in the township and they settled on lot 5, con. 4 where the deceased was born. At the age of 20, Josiah with his brother Ben, cleared the virgin forest from the land on lot 12, con.1 and it was here that he later made his home.. His bride was Ellen Fitzpatrick of Essa, who predeceased him by 41 years. Their children one son and 5 daughters surviving were Rev.Dr. J.C. Handy, pastor of the First methodist Church of Galveston Texas, who came home for the funeral; Miss. Gertrude of Toronto; Mary of Collingwood, margaret and Kate at home and Mrs. Wesley Graham of Alliston. Mr. Handy was one of a family of 12, only one of whom survives. His brother George died in Barrie at the age of 82 and also his brother James age 82. Jesse of Elmvale died age 89 and Ben of barrie died age 86. The family trait coupled with a lifetime spent on the farm account for the unusual vitality which Mr. Handy showed in his declining years. Josiah plowed and farmed until 19 years ago Since in Barrie he regularly attended The barrie Central Church. The funeral was held, Rev. A.J.Carscadden officiating. After a brief service had been held at the family residence in Henry St. West. The body was taken to Alliston Union Cemetery for burial.
