About Lt. Josiah Littlefield

Josiah Littlefield son of Capt John and Patience was born abt 1661 in Wells Maine. Josiah 1st married Lydia Masters abt 1686 in Wells. Josiah and Lydia had the following children Josiah Jr born 1688 (A) John born 1695 Nathaniel born 1697 (B) Peter born 1699 (C) Anna born 1700 Esther born 1703 Lydia born c1705 Josiah and his wife were attacked by Indians on the east side of Cape Neddick between York and Wells 24 June 1696. Josiah and his family were present when Thomas Cole and his wife were killed by an Indian attack. They were in Manchester in May 1698 and then in Wells where they were members of the church in 1701.(3) Lydia and her son were killed by Indians on their way back from Boston 10 Aug. 1707. Josiah was captured by the Indians on 22 Apr. 1708 and spent two years in Canada returning in July 1710 only to be killed in an Indian attack in Apr. 1712.

Josiah married 2nd Elizabeth Hilton. Josiah and Elizabeth had the following children Sarah Elizabeth Josiah was killed by Indians April 1712 After the death of his father, Josiah was to assume the estate during the lifetime of his mother and for a short time afterwards. During his captivity Josiah's children and all his estate were put under the care of Josiah Winn, who married Lydia, a daughter of Josiah's brother. After Josiah's return from captivity a controversy arose between him and Winn. The exact cause of these difficulties is unclear as Winn appears to be a man of good character, however Josiah's wife Elizabeth was of a different nature. As a second wife she caused great discord among the family and she was probably not well reconciled to the fact that the court had given Winn control of the children and estate. Evidently she probably complained to Josiah about some of Winn's proceedings and her disposition was not geared towards an amicable settlement and before they had reached any conclusion Josiah was killed by the Indians and Elizabeth was appointed his administratrix. Josiah Led a life beset by Indians. On their way from Boston to Wells, his wife and Josiah Jr. were killed by Indians on 10 Aug 1707. He was captured in Apr 1708 and spent two years in Canada, writing letters arranging for his release, and returned in Apr 1710.

He was killed by Indians in Apr 1712. Supposedly, he had drowned 12 of them that afternoon and on his way home that night he got to his door and they shot him in the back. The house was at Perkins Cove, ME

Another source gives his birth as 1649, but this would make him Mary's child. Also his gravestone says that he was aged about 50, which would put his birth around 1660 not 1650.
