About Josiah Nisbet, Capt.

  • Some dates and links to other family members here: http://genealogy.links.org/links-cgi/readged?/home/ben/camilla-gene...
  • His wife, Frances Herbert Evans, was a goddaughter of his mother.
  • Date and place of marriage, and other information quoted from the Nelson Society here: http://aboutnelson.yuku.com/topic/573 "Ashore he partook of the fast life for a while but eventually settled with his mother in Exmouth. His joy there was his ownership of a gaff rigged yacht, an interest shared with Frances Evans, who became his wife at Littleham Church on the 31st March 1819. Subsequently he moved to Paris, became a successful dealer in Government Stocks and Bonds, and was joined by Lady Nelson. A chill, which turned to pleurisy, proved fatal and he died aged fifty. A tomb was arranged in Littleham, which contains his body, and family members and it is there that Lady Nelson lies. " (Unfortunately their links don't work.)
  • "He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the Royal Navy." (http://www.thepeerage.com/p32394.htm#i323932) This was attributed to his stepfather Admiral Nelson's help - suggested as "bare-faced cheating" by one source (Young Nelsons: Boy sailors during the Napoleonic Wars by D. A. B. Ronald): https://books.google.com.au/books?id=mpSejn1bcRYC&pg=PT129&lpg=PT12...
  • Nelson, the Sword of Albion has some information about his later years here: https://books.google.com.au/books?id=QrbkAgAAQBAJ&pg=PA841&lpg=PA84...
  • This source also paints a less than flattering picture of the young Josiah http://www.historyhome.co.uk/people/ladynel.htm (near the bottom) "...that they quarrelled, too, about Lady Nelson's son, Josiah Nisbet, at this time a captain in the navy, whom his mother wished to be considered as her husband's heir; and that after ‘one of these domestic broils’ Nelson ‘wandered all night through the streets of London in a state of absolute despair and distraction’. It is well established that Nisbet was rude, quarrelsome, and intemperate; that he had much annoyed his stepfather while in command of the Thalia, and that when that ship was paid off he was never employed again. "
  • The Gentleman's Magazine and Historical Chronicle, Jan-Jun3 1819, vol 89, p.368 (entry 31), records Josiah's marriage to Frances Evans, fourth daughter of Herbert Evans, Esq., of Eagles Bush, Glamorganshire: https://books.google.com.au/books?id=081KAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA368&lpg=PA36...
  • The grave in St Margaret and St Andrew Churchyard, Littleham, East Devon District, Devon, England, where he was buried with his mother, who died a year later, and also four of his children, according to the insscription, along with additional information, can be seen here: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=48219690
