Joe was the son of Obediah Vernon and Sarah Smith Wyatt. He was born in Meigs Co., Tennesse before his parents and many other relatives made the trek to Laclede Co., Missouri. He was named after his two grandfathers; Josiah Vernon and Moses Wyatt.
He served in the Civil War on the Union side. He enlisted on January 20th, 1862 in Dallas Co., Missouri. He was a private in Co. B of the 4th S. M. Missouri Cavalry. His service ended on Jan. 31st, 1865.
After his return to civilian life he married Prudence Emily Hunter on Aug. 27th, 1865 in Laclede Co., Missouri. They raised their family in the Blackfoot area of Springhollow Twp. in Laclede Co., Missouri. This is very close to the town of Lebanon. In the late 1870s and early 1880s they lived on a farm on the border of Moniteau and Cole Counties, but returned to Springhollow Twp.
Obit: A Lebanon area Newspaper:
"JOSIAH M. VERNON died Monday 30 Dec 1907 at his home in the Blackfoot area. Death occurred from cancer from which he had suffered for two years. Funeral services were at the Atchley Cemetery at 10:00 pm Wednesday under the direction of Rev. Francis, Rev. Arthur Wallace and E. L. Ely. Mr. Vernon was born 3 Feb 1842 in Meigs County, TN and came to Laclede County in 1844. He married in 1866(sic) to Prudence C. Hunter and of their seven children, 5 survive: Mrs. V. T. Adkins, Don O. Vernon, Mrs. Clarence King, Mrs. Brook Alexander of Shawnee, OK., and Newton Vernon. Mr. Vernon's wife Prudence also survives.
Mr. Vernon served four years in MO State Militia and was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church."
