About Joyce Coggin

Joyce Bland was the daughter of Gregory Bland of London. She was born c.1618 and emigrated to Virginia, date unknown. She married (1) Cheney Boyce, Ancient Planter, c.1638, but had no children. Cheney died in c.1649. She married (2) Richard Tye and had several children. She married (3) John Cogan, MD, and is believed to be the mother of Rebecca Cogan.

Joyce had a sister Frances Bland. Frances also emigrated to Virginia. Frances is believed by many to be the first wife of John Cogan, MD, and is believed to the mother of his only son, John Coggin, often called John Jr.

Joyce's first husband, Cheney Boyce, was born in c.1599 in England and emigrated to Virginia in the earliest days of the colony, earning the title Ancient Planter for surviving the trying times in Virginia in 1618. He had been previously married. His wife Sarah had been carried off by Indians and was returned only after the settlers burned the corn crops. Sarah was the mother of Thomas Boyce, born before 1640. After Sarah's death, he married Joyce. After Cheney died, Thomas remained in Joyce's care, causing many later researchers to believe she was the mother.

Joyce's second husband was Capt. Richard Tye, born in 1590 in Kent, England and died in 1658 in Charles City County, Virginia. They were married in 1644. As far as records have been found, they had three children - two daughters and a son. Some sources speculate that there were more children, these are the ones that are proven - Elizabeth, Frances and Lambert (sometimes written as Lambeth).

Joyce's third husband was Dr. John Coggin (or Coggan or Cogan, all are acceptable). Depending on the source cited, John first married Joyce's sister Frances and divorced her after the birth of their son, John. There are no dates found for the marriage or divorce. He then married Joyce c.1658 and had one daughter, Rebecca.

Children of Joyce Bland and second husband Richard Tye:

  • Elizabeth Tye, born c.1650 and married John Jane.
  • Frances Tye, born c.1652 and married Charles Bartholomew.
  • Lambeth/Lambert Tye, born c.1655 in Charles City County, Virginia, married Mary Ann (unk) c.1688, and had several children. He died c.1728.

Child of Joyce Bland and third husband, John Coggin:

  • Rebecca Coggin, born c.1660, married (1) Francis Poythress II and (2) Charles Bartholomew, widower of her half-sister. This marriage was taken to court as "incestuous," but, as the first wife was a half-sister, they managed to get the marriage approved.

m. ~ 1645 after death of her 1st husband Cheney Boyce (she later married Dr. John Cogan after death of Richard Tye) (b. ~1618 in England, d. unknown).
