PART 1

DESCRIPTION VILJOEN, JOSHUA JACOBUS. EGGENOTES: JOHANNA SUSANNA (GEBORE VENTER) EN MAGDALENA (GEBORE JANSE VAN VUUREN).

STARTING 19090000 ENDING 19090000

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

He completed a claim for war losses after the ABO - claimed 1574 pounds and was allotted 1102 pounds. His sworn statement: I live at Kopje Alleen. I was a burger and on commando. I remained out till the end. I am willing to sign the declaration. I owned Kopje Alleen 1570 morgen, but have sold it since peace was declared. It was unmortgaged. At the commencement of the war I had 750 sheep, 50 odd cattle, and 16 horses. Beside the 16 I had five horses which I sold to the late government for which I received receipts. ......After some more comments how it went with the five, he proceeds: All the sheep and some of the cattle were taken from me from the house while I was present. The rest of the cattle I saw taken, later my wife told me the horses were taken from the house. I had a buckwagon, a scotch cart, cape cart and a buggy. I was in the neighbourhood and saw the British take away the cape cart and set the whole place on fire. When I returned the other two carts and the wagon were completely burnt. There were about 30 bags of mealies and wheat on the wagon when it was burnt and was burnt with it. There were also 3000 oat sheaves in the loft of the dwelling house and burnt with it, and about 800 bundles of barley sheaves burnt. My wife only saved a little bedding of the furniture., the rest she told me was all taken away and burnt. My wife and I received no receipts from the British and all I retained was one horse and have suffered the loss of everything else. Signed with his X mark on 23 June 1903.

The finding of the Commission in the above, date 27 June 1903, second part of the document: After deducting charges in excess of tariff and amounts disallowed we assess the total of his claim at 1102 pounds as per list attached; but as claimant owned over 1000 morgen of ground which he sold for 2 pounds per morgen a short time ago, this commission does not consider him entitled to assistance.

Hy en sy broers en susters maak die Groot Trek mee as kinders (hy ongeveer 9) saam met sy ma en stiefpa , Barend Petrus de Beer.
