Virginia State Senator Asa Watkins was a native of Prince Edward and resident of Farmville. He married Nannie Elizabeth Forbes in 1886. Judge Watkins came from a long line of distinguished men. His father was a Judge. He grandfather was aptly termed one of the most impressive men in Virginia. These Watkins, the first in Virginia, came from Wales in the 17th century.

This Watkins received his early education at public school in Farmville, then attended nearby Hampden-Sydney. He went on to study law at the University of Virginia. He commenced practice in Farmville. Among the offices he held for his community are deputy clerk of the court, deputy treasurer, deputy sheriff, Commonwealth Attorney, and judge. He did much to improve the training of teachers in Farmville.

He was a Democrat and Presbyterian.
