About Judge Isaac Ward Hale

In 1822 he was in the lumbering business on the Susquehanna River, until 1836 when he moved to Cattaraugus Co., NY. Here he piloted on the Ohio and Allegheny Rivers. He brought his family to Osceola, Polk Co., WI in July of 1851. They came by boat, down the Ohio, than up the Mississippi to the St. Croix. He was known as "Judge Hale", as he was the first elected Judge of Polk County in 1853. He served for 8 years and was also the town Superintendent for 2 years. From 1852 to 1857 he bought 200 acres of land in section 26, Osceola Twp. He died at the home of his daughter, Esther, (Mrs. Edgar C. Treadwell) at age 90.
