About Judge Lucas Ryerson, Sr
A Judge of the Court of Common Pleas New Jersey
from the Ryerson Genealogy: JUDGE LUCAS RYERSON,' {Joris,-" Martin'), son of Joris Ryerson and his wife Hannah (Schouten) Dey, was b. in New York, and bap. on April 9, 1704; d. in Morris Co., N. J., in 1764. The old record of bap., still preserved, reads "Luyckes, son of Joris Ryerse and Anntie Schoute. Witnesses, Gerrit Burger, and Dina Klopp." His name in Dutch was written "Luyckes Reyerse." He usually wrote it "Luke Reyerse" and the descendants of his son, Samuel, still retained the old spelling modified to "Ryerse." He resided at Pacquanac, upon a farm adjoining that of the old homestead, and where the Laflin & Rand Powder Works are now located (Wayne, N. J.). He was a prominent man in his day, a county officer and Judge of the Court of Common Pleas. He was a large property holder, and seemed to have a hobby for buying land. He was a man of giant stature and great strength.
Lucas Ryerson was thrice m., first, about 1736, to Elizabeth, dau. of Capt. Daniel and Elsie (Reading) Howell. She was b. in Amwell, Hunterdon Co., N. J., about 1714, and died about 1745. Her mother, Elsie (Reading) Howell, was sister of Gov. John Reading, whose wife was ]\Iary Ryerson, sister of aforesaid Lucas Ryerson. (See Reading-Howell Family by J. Granville Leach.)
Lucas Ryerson, m., for his second wife, at Hackensack, N. J., on June 4, 1745, Susanna Van der Linden. Little is known of this marriage.
Mr. Ryerson m. , for his third wife, Johanna Van der Hoff , who survived him.
