Judge Tatum was born in Joplin and was a lifetime resident. He graduated from Joplin High School and attended Westminster College at Fulton. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan. He received his law degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1942 and was admitted into the Missouri Bar in 1942.
He practiced law from 1946 to his retirement in 1988. He served three terms as Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney and served several appointed terms as Joplin Municipal Judge.
Mr. Tatum served in the US Navy with the Fifth and Seventh Fleets during WWII. Stewart was an assigned JAG officer until he took command of the LST # 672. There were no casualties in this ship's crew during the war, although it participated in most all major South Pacific invasions. He was past commander of the Joplin U.S. Naval Reserve Unit.
He was a member of the Twin Hills Golf and Country Club and the Godfather's Golf Group. He was one of the early members of the Joplin Historical Society. He was a 33rd Degree Mason.
