Son of Samuel Salter and Bridget Shea. Brother of Nancy Salter McClean (McClain), Samuel K. Salter, Alexander M. Salter, and Eli W. Salter. Husband of Frances Meason Salter, William and Frances had no children.
He was a close friend of Jesse B. Boone, younger son of Daniel Boone. William had a varied career as a laborer; a boatman on the Ohio River; manager of a saltworks; Sheriff of Fayette County, Pennsylvania; operator of Scioto Furnace; Scioto County Commissioner; Associate Judge in Scioto County; and Ohio State Senator representing Adams, Pike, Lawrence and Scioto counties.
He died at the age of 90, leaving a considerable estate.
