Julia Candace Johnson

Candace Clapham Johnson was born august 31, 1891, near Mitchell, South Dakota, and passed away August 27, 1974, in Hillsboro, Oregon. Her Parents were Mary Seaton and Chauncey Clapham.

Her education was from schools in South Dakota and Missouri. She was graduated from the Cainsville High School in 1911, and later attended college in Kirksville, Missouri.

She was a pioneer teacher in the Missouri system. At one time she taught the Old White Oak School east of Ridgeway and the Banner rural school. she also taught at Pleasanton, Iowa, and in the Cainsville system

in 1918, she moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where she worked for Pittsburg Plate Glass Company. She married Harry Raymond Johnson, March 10, 1921 in Gillette Wyoming

In the new state of Wyoming again she became a teacher and taught in the Gillette system and rural schools

The family moved to Vancouver, Washington(Vanport, Oregon), in September, 1942, where she continued her education and taught in Vancouver, Washington(Vanport, Oregon) schools. Later the family moved to Beaverton, Oregon, in 1948, where they lived many years. Again she became involved in teaching and became an ardent worker in the Presbyterian Church where she used her education and talent in planning and presenting study groups and programs for church women.

After her husband retired they operated a retail stamp business from their home

Her husband passed away April, 1974

She leaves to mourn, three children, Mrs. Mary Lolsie of Hillsboro, Oregon; Robert Johnson, of Alola, Oregon, and Charles Raymond Johnson of Vancouver, Washington; 12 grandchildren, two brothers;Benjamin Clapham of Tabor, Iowa, and Robert Clapham of Gilman City, Missouri and one sister in-law Mrs.Charles Clapham of Sheridan, Wyoming.

Burial services were in the Reedville Church, and burial was in the same area

One of her favorite poems was;

CROSSING THE BAR

Sunset and Evening star, and one clear call for me! May there be no moaning of the bar When I put out to sea.

But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from our Boundless deep, Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell, after that the dark! And may there be so sadness of farewell When I embark.

For, though from out our bonds of time and peace The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my pilot face to face, When i have crossed the bar.
