About Julia Bolton, SM/PROG

Upon the discovery of the 1792 Marriage Settlement for Julia Bolton and Benjamin Wright in the Irish Registry of Deeds (ROD) and the 1806 Deed, also in the ROD, in which Julia Turvey (alias Wright, now wife of Edward Turvey) leased lands her father William Bolton had acquired in 1772, it became apparent that the wife of Benajmin Wright and Edward Ford Turvey was Julia Bolton, not Julia Daniel. The names Bolton and Daniel have been confused in a number of sources. However, these documents from the Irish Registry of Deeds (uploaded under Media), available on FamilySearch.org, are documentary proof of Julia's maiden name. See also:

Another accurate source is:The Reminiscences of the Turvey Family deposited in the Settlers Museum, Grahamstown, South Africa.

Was Julia Bolton's husband's name Benjamin Wright or William Wright? The 1792 Marriage Settlement identifies the groom as Benjamin Wright, merchant of Dublin. The marriage license also identifies him as Benjamin Wright. However, some sources suggest he may have changed his name to William just before he died in Maryland. Further exploration and documentation are needed.

https://www.1820settlers.com/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I2973... Grahamstown Journal, December 1837: Departed this life on Friday evening, 1st Dec. Mrs.Julia TURVEY, aged 60 years, deeply regretted by her numerous offspring. She was a tender Mother, a faithful Wife and sincere Friend. Her early prospects ill fitted her to combat with an adverse world; but it brought her nearer to her God and enabled her to triumph over Death and the Grave, imparting a happy consolation to her bereaved partner, to whom a union of 32 years only served to increase her affection, and who leaves this testimony of her worth."

Julia Bolton's birthdate is based on her death notice above.

Various family stories state that her widowed father was concerned for the welfare of his daughter and wanted her married to a reliable Quaker gentleman before he died. However, the marriage settlement clearly identifies her eldest brother Abraham Bolton and her brother-in-law James Cowley as trustrees to ensure that she receive financial support should her husband die before her or not be able to maintain her support. Therefore, she already had family members looking after her well-being. Further, her father did not die until 1806 and then he died intestate, so he died 13 years after her marriage and didn't take care of his own financial situation. So why did Julia Bolton, a Protestant, aged 15, marry Benjamin Wright, a Quaker?
