About Julius Stewart McInnes
He came to Darlington S.C. with his parents at 2 years of age after they had been rescued from a second story window of their house on Debordieu Island near Georgetown, in the Northeaster storm of 1883. His father had been a manager of a Rice Plantation which was destroyed by the storm. They went to Darlington to visit Mrs. McInnes' Aunt Rosalie whose husband William Joseph Early agreed to help Mr. McInnes (who had earlier training as a blacksmith) start a livery stable. Julius grew in Darlington and graduated from St. John's High School. He then graduated from the College of the City of Charleston (1913) , and finished Law School at the University of South Carolina in 1915. He distinushed himself as a debator and orator in the University of South Carolina. It was in the last year in Law School that he was elected to the State Legistature (1915-1916). He resigned as a member of the Draft Board in 1918 to enlist in the Army, where he served at Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky. until is discharge. He served another term in the Legistature in 1921-1922. Then he served as Darlington County judge of Probate until he accepted the job as manager of the Right Of Way Department for the Carolina Power and Light Company. He held this position from Sept 15th, 1925 unitl his death.
He was a Master Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the American Legion. Although his residence was in Raleigh N.C. for almost 30 years his business with the power company brought him back to South Carolina (his first love) almost every week and this was the reason he was in Columbia when he died.
