About Jyniah Mary Pearl Te Awa

Tortured and killed by babysitter Tiana Mary-Anne Odessa Kapea. From early August 2007 Jyniah suffered an "extended period of cruelty" at Tiana's hands. She was held against a gas heater, hung on a clothesline, swung around by her hair, hung on the back of a wardrobe door and shut in a closed freezer several times. The severe brain injuries that would kill her were a result of being kicked, thrown against a wall, shaken and smothered. Jyniah was taken from Manurewa to Middlemore Hospital then transferred to Starship Hospital where she died. In 2018 Jyniah's father Ike Mokohoria Te Awa was jailed for the long-term physical and sexual abuse of two young children. Jyniah Mary Te Awa was rushed to hospital after turning blue. She was freezing cold but warmed up after her mother, Lisa Cassidy, fed her. Her symptoms mystified doctors. But after the 10-month-old was murdered by her babysitter, the horrifying truth was revealed - she was repeatedly bundled into a freezer and left there, who knows for how long. Yet that was not all. Jyniah died in September 2007 as a result of head injuries. Her babysitter, Tiana Mary-Anne Odessa Kapea, pleaded guilty to murdering the baby. The murder was the tip of the iceberg. Kapea, a close friend of Jyniah's father Ike Te Awa's family, admitted systematically torturing Jyniah for much of her short life. September 2017: Jyniah Mary Te Awa, 10 months old, was tortured by her babysitter Tiana Tapiki. The baby suffered a brain injury while in Tapiki's care. It later emerged she had kicked, shaken and thrown the baby, swung her by the hair, put in a closed freezer, hung from a washing line and smothered. Tapiki pleaded guilty to Jyniah's murder. 2007 Jyniah Te Awa, 10 months old, killed by her baby sitter and family friend Tiana Kapea, who was in November, 2008, sentenced to 17 years. Baby Jyniah was among other torturous exposures, tossed into a deepfreeze as punishment for something unexplainable that only babies, less than a year old can be guilty of. She was also beaten and swung by her hair, and in similar fashion to another case on these pages, was hung on a line by her ‘T’ shirt. Source: https://childabuseinnz.wordpress.com/my-memorial/

A man whose baby daughter was murdered after months of systematic torture at the hands of a babysitter has himself been sent to prison for 10 years for the long-term physical and sexual abuse of two young children. Ike Mokohoria Te Awa was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to 20 charges of sexual and physical abuse involving two children and his partner. His sentencing came shortly after the 10th anniversary of the murder of his 10-month-old daughter Jyniah Mary Te Awa in September 2007.
